EXAMPLE PROGRAMME FOR THE PSL PACE RATING CLINIC

Open with coffee - suggested duration of clinic: 10:00 am to 3:30 pm

1. Brief Introduction (10 minutes max) – Accompanied by a short film.

Definition of Rating;
Definitions of Standard (100), 75 and 125 rating;
Concepts of Loose, Tight, Flat and Steep rating;
Requirements for a pass (using best 10 out of 11 exercises)

All exercises to be 20 observations – following at least three demonstrations at 100 - range of ratings (i.e. highest and lowest rating) to be given for each exercise – also first rating of each exercise to be given to delegates to ensure that they are “on the right track”.

2. Rating Exercise 1 – Walking on Level Ground

Explain – using the graph – the meaning of Systematic Error and Mean Deviation.

Emphasise that this is called a clinic so that errors can be corrected during the course of the day. It is not simply a rating test.

3. Rating Exercise 2 – Dealing 26 cards

Plot graph of results to illustrate concepts of loose, tight, flat and steep rating.

4. Rating Exercise 3 – Moving draughts on draughtsboard

5. Rating Exercises 4 to 6 – Activities filmed in a live situation

6. Lunch - optional (45 minutes)

7. Rating Exercises 7 to 11 – Activities filmed in a live situation

8. Calculation and Analysis of Results

Systematic Error;
Mean Deviation;
Percentage of correct observations;
Percentage of observations within ±5 points;
Percentage of “wild” observations of ±15 points or more;
Percentage of loose observations;
Percentage of tight observations.

9. Note

All exercise sheets and the analysis sheet will be collected by the tutor after the completion of these calculations. The calculations will then be checked and if necessary, corrected, (after the conclusion of the clinic) by the tutor and a brief report on each delegate showing all of the above statistics will be sent to the client company.
